Class 1 Wed Jan 8 @ UNBC 10-4072: Course Orientation, Heritage Inquiry Ice Breaker, Values of Social Studies activity, discussion and introduction to course topics, discussion on how to navigate global issues (e.g. Iran crisis) with students of different ages, assign reading from Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer ("A Mother's Work") -- Education as habitat restoration.
Class 2 Wed Jan 15 @ UNBC 10-4072:: Discuss cold weather (-40 in PG today!) and ways of talking about climate change with difference ages, Prince George Geology activity. Discuss Kimmerer reading. Primer on Canadian History -- what do we need to know to be able to teach? Snapshots in Time activity. Canadian Trivia game. Some deductions about the revised BC Social Studies K-10 curriculum. Discussion of embedded coursework at Harwin. Class 3 Wed Jan 22 @ Harwin Elementary: Orientation to the Embedded Experience / Experiment -- meeting staff and students, trying out some reading strategies and activities with students, reflection on same. Finalize plan for embedded schedule (see image on right). First small group lesson with Harwin students. Class 4 Wed Jan 29 @ Harwin Elementary: Prep for mini-lessons with the students. Discuss the Historical and Geographic Thinking reading. Develop a context for this kind of work with the elementary students here in the building in mind. Discuss how we can make and use manipulative to bring this about. Develop shared understanding around the course assignments and questions the group wants to explore. Second small group lesson with Harwin students. Class 5 Wed Feb 5 @ Harwin Elementary: Reflection on learning-to-date in our embedded experiment. Some thoughts and resources for teaching about the history of Prince George and area. Third small group lesson with Harwin students. Class 6 Wed Feb 12 @ Harwin Elementary: Plan on decide for demonstration of learning on Mar 25th (EDUC 366 assignment). Group discussion -- how would we scale up what we have done here to a unit plan or a year plan? Last embedded session before break; fourth small group lesson with Harwin students. (reading break Feb 18-21, 391 practicum Feb 24-Mar 13) Class 7 Wed Mar 18 @ UNBC 10-4072: Online component -- primary source work to support Social Studies K-7, working with Historical and Geographical Thinking (reading). Also, cathedral thinking reading (yet to be compiled!). Class 8 Wed Mar 25 @ UNBC 10-4072: Either guest speaker (Jen Boivin on inclusion) or a SS topic. Would also like to visit the topic of the cornerstones in your cathedral thinking --> the interplay of curriculum, theory, identity and the structures they support, including socio-emotional dimensions and social, intellectual, physical, and ecophyschologicald development. Class 9 Apr 1 @ Harwin Elementary: SS lesson. Fifth small group lesson with Harwin students.
